A British boyband star is set to feature in a new ABBA spin-off show later this month.

Antony Costa, a member of boyband Blue, will begin performances of Mama Mia! The Party at the O2 from August 31.

The singer-songwriter, who was born in Edgware and attended Hendon School, said that he was “thrilled” to have been picked to star in the show.

Guests at the performances will enjoy a gourmet Greek meal while Costa and his co-stars tell an original story through dialogue and ABBA songs.

The story centres around Nikos, played by Costa, and his wife Kate, who run the exotic Nikos Taverna on the Greek island of Skopelos.

Costa first found fame with boyband Blue. The Barnet local helped form the band in 2000 alongside Lee Ryan, Simon Webbe and Duncan James.

Together they went on to sell 15 million records worldwide, winning a Brit Award for Best British Pop Act in 2003.

Costa has previously starred in a West End production of Blood Brothers as well as theatre performances of Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast.

He said: ‘I am thrilled to have been given such a unique opportunity to be a part of MAMMA MIA! THE PARTY.

"Being a massive ABBA fan myself, I cannot wait to get stuck into such a fun project and immerse myself into the world that Björn Ulvaeus and Sandi Toksvig have so masterfully crafted. See you in the Taverna."

The London version of Mamma Mia! The Party, which originally opened in Stockholm in January 2016, has proved a hit with ABBA fans, and will now run until at least March 3, 2024.
