Lights will be switched out at the council to mark the anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.

Hertsmere Borough Council is calling on residents from Borehamwood and Potters Bar to take part in LIGHTS OUT, a UK-wide event that aims to create a moment of reflection to mark the centenary of the start of the First World War.

The event calls for lights to be switched of between 10pm and 11pm on August 4, with participants leaving on a single light or candle, to mark the exact time that Britain entered the First World War at 11pm on August 4, 1914.

The council will shine a single bright light from each corner of the top floor of the civic offices building in Elstree Way, Borehamwood.

Council leader Councillor Morris Bright, said: "The LIGHTS OUT initiative provides the public across the UK with an opportunity to reflect on one of the darkest periods in history and remember all those who gave their lives during the First World War. I'm very proud that we are taking part in this event and I hope that Hertsmere residents will take the opportunity to also participate in what should be a very fitting tribute."

LIGHTS OUT is part of 14-18 NOW, the UK’s official cultural programme for the commemoration of the centenary of the First World War.
