A teenager who travelled across the country in a rickshaw for charity helped raise more than £2m.

Carolina De Freitas, 18, took part in BBC The One Show’s ‘Rickshaw Challenge’ for Children in Need, following her involvement with Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice, based in Victors Way, Barnet.

The rickshaw team, which involved five others, raised £2,741,840 after completing its ‘Salford to Walford’ journey, which saw them cycle more than 450 miles from the BBC’s Media City, near Manchester, to end up at the EastEnders set in Elstree during the appeal on Friday, November 14.

Carolina, who lives in Tottenham, said: “I think the highlights were just hanging out with all of the team, and how close we’ve become. At the beginning I didn’t expect to become so close to these guys, but we’re such good friends now. During the challenge I just loved the teamwork, even when people were feeling tired we stuck together and pushed through the miles.”

Carolina got involved with Noah’s Ark after her older brother Pedro was diagnosed with cancer. He died in January 2011.

David Ramsden, chief executive for BBC Children in Need, said: “Knowing that young people who’ve been supported by the charity are working so hard to give something back is a powerful message. This year’s results have been phenomenal. I would like to thank and congratulate Team Rickshaw and everyone who has supported them.”
