NEIGHBOURS who fear “fits of road rage could end up deadly” are calling on a one-way system to be created on their narrow street.

People living in The Grove, Finchley Central, say cars constantly have to reverse to let others pass, creating “chaos” on the corner nearest to Nether Street.

They say hundreds of crashes happen a month, parked cars are constantly hit and physical and verbal fights break out on a regular basis.

Lorna Morris, a mother who has lived in the street for 18 years, said: “It’s a nightmare and it’s getting worse. When there were gas works and the road was blocked, it was bliss.

“There was no major catastrophe anywhere else in the surrounding roads, proving a scheme like this could work.

“I can’t even park in my driveway anymore because I’m scared about backing out – nobody would let you pass and you’d end up hitting something.

“There are dents and dings all over my car because people take the corner too wide. People are so discourteous when you try to pass. I’ve had people who look 80-odd give me the finger.

“The problem is the blind spot around the corner – it’s a notorious bend and people take it too fast.”

Mrs Morris’s car Saab was completely destroyed after a crash last week.

Barnet council had planned to trial a one-way system two years ago, which would have cost £15,000, but proposals were dropped after opposition from other neighbours.

This left those who live directly on the bend furious.

Mrs Morris added: “We were so excited – we just whooped when we were told a one-way scheme would be trialled. I’ve been petitioning for this for 18 years.

“They put metal poles in, had planned to put a mini roundabout in and widen the roads – they’d even chalked out where they’d do it – but then nothing.

“The council’s excuses were feeble. It was disgraceful. Since then the council have just been passing the buck.”

Damien Thorn, 42, said: “I asked Barnet council what they were playing at. They said the scheme would be discussed at the next council meeting but it wasn’t.

“It’s ridiculous. Our road is a danger zone. This isn’t something that should be taken lightly as well. I am terrified that one day I’ll hear a crash and someone will have been killed.

“Does someone need to die before this is sorted out?”

He has suggested creating width restrictions or priority signs up on the road to calm the traffic but the council have not responded to his requests.

Grandfather David Lewis, 72, said: “I am 50/50 as to whether this scheme would work but either way, something needs to change.

“I am keeping an open mind and I’d at least like a trial to see if something like this could make a difference.”

A statement from Barnet council said: "“Plans to implement a one-way system at The Grove were put on hold last year after a consultation exercise with local residents which showed there was mixed opinion for the proposed scheme.

"Residents are able to raise their concerns at the next Finchley and Golders Green Residents Forum on 21st October and, if appropriate, the matter will be escalated to the local area committee to review suitable traffic calming measures at The Grove.”
