CELEBRATIONS took place across Barnet for older people to mark Silver Sunday.

Held last Sunday (October 4), the nationwide event celebrates the contribution of older people to communities across the country.

Among the celebrations was a tea party at Trinity Church, in Eversfield Gardens, Mill Hill.

Organised by The Good Neighbour Scheme for Mill Hill and Burnt Oak, about 80 guests enjoyed a raffle and cake, and sang a wide range of songs, from Second World War numbers to Elvis Presley hits.

Herakles Koumoullos, development officer at The Good Neighbour Scheme, said: “It was really vibrant, and amazing how the songs lifted the atmosphere. As soon as the singing started, their hands were up in the air. It was great to see.”

The 60-year-old, of Marsh Lane, Mill Hill, added: “This year, Silver Sunday really took off. It is vital, and great to give older people some of their dignity back, in a society so obsessed by youth.

“They have so much experience, and have been through so much. They are all individuals and it is about giving them some of that individuality back, and some respect.”

A tea party for over 55s also took place at Hendon Town Hall, organised by Barnet Council.
