Two men have been arrested following a cashpoint burglary and police car chase in Edgware.

Police were called at around 1.30am this morning (April 28) to reports of a burglary at the Western Union in Station Road.

At least two men broke into the premises using power tools and forced entry to a cash machine inside before stealing a large quantity of money in mixed denominations. They then left the scene.

Officers attended and noticed a vehicle acting suspiciously close by. They attempted to stop the car on Oakleigh Avenue, but it failed to stop.

Following a short pursuit, a passenger got out the vehicle on Back Lane. He was detained nearby and arrested on suspicion of burglary.

The car continued for a short period and then stopped on Watling Avenue. The driver ran off but was also arrested on suspicion of burglary, making off from police and dangerous driving.

The two men were taken to a north London police station where they remain in custody.

Officers recovered a large quantity cash from a satchel from the car.

Detective Sergeant Mark Williamson, from Brent CID, said: "This was clearly a well planned attack on the Western Union. Had it not been for the swift response by Barnet police officers, the thieves would have got away with a significant amount of money."
