PLANS for a major regeneration scheme for Brent Cross has taken a step forward as Barnet Council signs a deal with development partners.

The Brent Cross Cricklewood scheme will create a new town centre, will bring 7,500 new homes, 27,000 jobs, three schools will be re-built, new parks and community facilities, and will see the redevelopment of Brent Cross shopping centre.

The scheme is split between the redevelopment of Brent Cross shopping centre on the north of the A406 road, provided by Hammerson and Standard Life Investments.

Leader of Barnet Council, Councillor Richard Cornelius, said it was a “fantastic opportunity” for the borough.

“Securing the agreement signifies our partners’ confidence in the scheme and London’s future.

"I am sure that together we will be able to breathe new life into this area and create a thriving London neighbourhood which will be a model for the 21st century and beyond.”

An extra Thameslink station linking the development to King’s Cross St Pancras in less than 15 minutes is being delivered by the council, and is supported by the Greater London Authority.

The northern and southern parts of the development, will be linked by a new pedestrian ‘living bridge’ across the A406 road. It will include new roads, pathways, cycling routes, parks and squares.

In 2010, the Brent Cross Cricklewood Development Partners, secured planning permission for £4bn. But four years later, revised planning permission was approved to separate the scheme between the north and south of the A406 road.

The Times Series reported that in January 2014, neighbours were “heartbroken” after failing to block the regeneration plans for the area.

An online poll showed that 46% of people were against the plans.
