The founder of an Edgware-based refugee charity went to Dunkirk to put on a special football tournament for the people currently residing in camps there.

Fuze Beyond Borders aims to bring together refugees and British volunteers by providing refugee camps in the Dunkirk region of northern France with material and nutritional aid, as well as motivational and educational activities.

It was founded by Daniela Pulido-Lopera, who was born and raised in Edgware and the trip to Dunkirk this weekend (September 10-11) was its 12th since October 2015.

A team of 20 London-based volunteers crossed the Channel to help out at the tournament with refereeing, score-keeping, handing out refreshments and entertaining children at the children’s area.

The tournament, co-hosted by various charities, was entitled The Liberté Cup and brought together refugees, football teams from across the region and volunteers.

Ms Pulido-Lopera said: “I am absolutely delighted with how the tournament went and it was great to see so many people from different cultures, religions and genders coming together against borders to speak the universal language of football.

“Fuze are committed to helping empower and integrate refugees and see football as an incredibly powerful tool in doing so – the Liberté Cup proved this.”

The charity is currently making plans for further trips to Dunkirk to aid refugees there.
