Like most people I have spoken to, I am thoroughly disgusted with Barnet’s greedy Conservative councillors (other than Brian and Kate Salinger), who decided to award themselves a hugh pay rise in these times when some people are finding it hard to put food on the table.

I was so outraged, I wrote to Grant Shapps MP (Local Communities Minister) — who spoke on national TV of his disgust of insane Barnet councillors — asking him what action he and the Government would be taking.

He said he wouldn’t be taking any action since this was up to the community.

I wrote to every Barnet councillor deploring the behaviour of the majority Conservatives. Not a single councillor who voted for the pay rise responded.

Residents tried to raise the issue at one of Barnet’s residents forums and were told it was not an issue for debate.

This behaviour is typical of councillors’ long-running disdain for residents.

In their rush to create the dictatorship of Barnet, these greedy little piggies seem to have modelled themselves on a piece of fiction created by a certain George Orwell.

Well, I say to David Cameron and his Government: you want us to work extra hard in our jobs and in our communities, so change the law so communities have some control over their out-of-control councils.

We’d all love to determine our own pay and expenses, but as was recently discovered, the temptation to abuse such a system is too great.

Mr Cameron needs to recognise human behaviour is not always what it should be and put the appropriate checks in place.

In the meantime, don’t let these councillors get away with this abuse.

Barnet residents, please use what few democratic rights you have left. Go to the Residents’ Association of Barnet (RAB) website (www.barnetrab.org) and sign all the petitions.

There is also a list of other ideas if you are “spitting chips” like me.

If we all protest, maybe someone will listen.
