Experienced defender Michael Nelson has already signed for Barnet for the forthcoming season, despite Martin Allen’s reluctance to confirm or deny the move, the Times Series understands.

The 35-year-old centre-back – nicknamed the Admiral – was freed by Cambridge United at the end of last season and has been training with the Bees since David Stephens was released.

Nelson, who has made more than 500 league appearances north and south of the border in a 15-year career, has featured prominently throughout pre-season for the Bees.

Head coach Allen confirmed earlier in pre-season the Gateshead-born stopper was in talks with the club’s chairman, Tony Kleanthous, about agreeing a deal with the club.

However, despite being asked on multiple occasions since whether or not the former Cambridge skipper is any closer to sealing a move to the League Two new-boys, Allen has remained coy.

Questioned on the matter again on Saturday following the 3-1 win over Championship side MK Dons, Allen kept his cards close to his chest.

“Nels is,” said the Bees boss before a lengthy pause. “We will have to wait and see.”

Pressed further on the issue he added: “I don’t know [whether it is done or not], I am not sure what the chairman has sorted out with his agent. We will have to wait and see over the next week.”

But The Times Series understands a deal for Nelson has already been in place for some time, though it is unclear why the Bees have not yet announced his signing.

Speaking earlier in pre-season, Allen confirmed his interest in the former Norwich City and Scunthorpe United defender.

“I would like to [sign him] but there are other players out there and it is coming to the time now where players are desperate for clubs if they have not got one,” said Allen.

“He has trained with us every day and paid his own expenses and for his own hotel, so I think that tells you something about him. I think you would have to say today he put a in a really good performance for us."

He continued: “Forget his age, he is a good player. He is a leader, a captain and a good player. So hopefully the chairman can get something sorted out with his agent."

Nelson made 40 appearances last term.
