There were three divisions between Barnet and Wolverhampton Wanderers last season and every one of them showed as the Championship side advanced to the third round of the League Cup 2-1.

The Bees, set out in an unfamiliar 3-4-3 system, were unable to replicate their impressive first round win at Millwall – also of the second tier as recently as May – as Kenny Jackett’s youthful side made light work of sealing their place in the hat for the next round.

Bright Enobakhare put the Championship side ahead in the third minute by marking his full debut with a first professional goal.

Just before the hour Sheyi Ojo curled home a sumptuous second to take the game out of Barnet’s reach.

But, as on Saturday as Bristol Rovers, the Bees refused to give up and pulled one back against the run of play when Bira Dembele tucked home following a well-worked short corner routine.

Allen, as promised, shuffled his pack and sprung a number of surprises with his team selection by opting to start in a 3-4-3 system and handing a debut to Jamie Stephens in place of the injured Graham Stack – one of six changes.

Bondz N’Gala, Michael Nelson and Dembele made up the defence with Mauro Vilhete, Tom Champion, Sam Muggleton and Elliott Johnson strung across midfield from left to right. Up front it was Shaun Batt – handed his first Bees start – and Ben Tomlinson flanking Aaron McLean.

Wolves boss Kenny Jackett made seven changes of his own with goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, Ojo, Ethan Ebanks-Landell and Kortney Hause holding onto their places from a 2-0 defeat at Cardiff City on Saturday.

Times Series:

For the second time in as many games the Bees gave themselves a mountain to climb by conceding inside three minutes.

A disastrous pass-back from Champion was intercepted by Wolves striker Adam Le Fondre who drew Stephens off his line before squaring for Enobakhare to tuck into the empty net.

But Barnet might have equalised three minutes later when a Muggleton hurl was nodded over by Dembele from a good position.

The Bees looked fragile, though, and twice in the space of as many minutes Vilhete lost possession in dangerous positions only for Liverpool loanee Ojo to squander the opportunity.

Le Fondre might have doubled the home side’s lead in the 38th minute when he stole into the penalty area, latched onto a bouncing ball, lofted the over Stephens and against the top of the crossbar.

Wolves had every right to feel aggrieved at not going in several goals ahead at the break after a flurry of presentable chances before the whistle.

First, Enobakhare played a one-two with Saville before shooting straight at Stephens from the edge of the penalty area.

Next, left-back Sylvain Deslandes raced into the penalty area and brought a fine near-post stop out of Stephens with a left-footed effort from an acute angle.

Then Enobakhare was denied his second in first-half injury time by a thunderous sliding block from Champion just as he steadied himself to shoot.

Allen made two changes at the break, introducing Curtis Weston and John Akinde in place of Muggleton and Batt.

But the second half began in much the same vein as the first ended, Le Fondre racing through to meet Stephens one-on-one but the Bees keeper again blocking well with his feet to deny the former Reading striker.

Bees boss Allen shuffled his pack again after just ten minutes of the second period, introducing Luke Gambin in place of Champion and moving Johnson into the centre of midfield, with Dembele and Vilhete at full-back, to shape up into a 4-4-2 system.

Times Series:

Before those changes could have the desired impact, though, Wolves went 2-0 up.

The dangerous Ojo picked his spot and bent the ball beyond the helpless Stephens to underline the Championship side’s superiority on the night.

The Bees still retained an occasional threat, though, and Tomlinson brought a smart near-post stop out of Arsenal loanee Emiliano Martinez.

Wolves substitute James Henry came within a whisker of making it three in the 68th minute, charging forward before flashing a shot just wide of the far post with Stephens at full stretch.

Times Series:

With 14 minutes to go Barnet suddenly deviated from the script and pulled one back.

From a short corner Johnson crossed into the middle where McLean helped the ball into the path of Dembele to tuck past Martinez from point-blank range.

Kortney Hause was denied a third to put the game beyond doubt when Stephens repelled his firm strike with a strong palm after Ojo had wreaked havoc down the left.

Barnet could not force a second, though, going closest from another corner which saw Akinde, Tomlinson and Gambin all passing up opportunities to get a clean strike on goal.

There will be no trip to Old Trafford or Anfield for Bees fans this year.
