Hendon overcame Millfield Old Boys 40-21 at Harrow RFC on Saturday to proceed to the next round of the Middlesex Rugby Federation Vase.

Arwel Roberts finished off a backline move after 25 minutes to score Hendon’s first try which was converted by captain Cian Hynes.

Millfield responded quickly and drew level leaving the score 7-7 at half-time.

From a Hendon scrum on the Millfield 22 Hynes collected and pushed through two defenders to score. The try was converted for a 14-7 lead.

Millfield levelled the scores at 14-14 after a run by their right wing and minutes later they were successful down the left wing to go 21-14 ahead.

However, from the restart Hendon winger Jeff McVitty found a way through the Millfield defence to score out wide with Hynes converting to again level the scores at 21-21.

Minutes later man-of-the-match Harry Charles picked up from the base of a scrum to score in the corner and Hendon were back in front, 26-21.

Millfield were now tiring and Charles crashed through their defence before passing to Donal O’Sullivan to score a try which was converted again by Hynes to leave Hendon leading 33-21.

In the last few minutes Hendon winger Chris Kayingi scored from 30 metres out with Hynes converting.

Hendon now face an away tie in the next round against Old Millhillians on the February 27.

Hendon coach John Casalaspro said: “With many of the first team not available it has been very useful to look at some talented Second team players for the next league match away to Saracens this Saturday.”
