A tough weekend for Times athletes in Rio was capped by a disappointing performance in the men's team foil for Javes Davis and Richard Kruse.
The pair, from Barnet and West Finchley respectively, were part of the four-man group beaten in the quarter-finals of the team competition after a 45-43 defeat by Russia, and eventually placed sixth when beaten by China in a play-off.
Davis won all three of his bouts with the Russians while Kruse had a more difficult time, with both of his encounters ending in defeat.
Speaking after defeat by China, Davis said: “It is not what we wanted, we came here to win at the end of the day. We focussed on one bout at a time and we wanted to beat the Russians.
"When that didn’t happen we moved our goal to fifth place and we gave our best.
“We did everything in our power and we worked very, very hard, it didn’t happen today unfortunately, that is just part of it."
Elsewhere, Beth Potter finished 34 out of 35 runners to complete the women's 10,000-metres in a time of 33:04.34, more than a minute off her career-best time she completed earlier this year.
Charlotte Wingfield.
Malta's Charlotte Wingfield made it through the 100m qualifying on Friday with a season-best 11.68, and followed up with an 11.90-second run in the heats the following day.
Daryll Neita could consider herself unlucky to miss out on qualifying for the semi-finals in the same event, finishing 0.02 seconds outside the cut-off time in 11.41.
