Barnet took an early lead at Newport through John Akinde but were left with nothing to show for it after the game was abandoned at half-time.

During the interval the referee Graham Salisbury called the managers of both sides together for a further inspection and with the likelihood of the rain persisting and the ball increasingly being held up on the waterlogged surface during the first-half, calling a halt to the game was an understandable decision.

Martin Allen had retained keeper Josh Vickers and Mauro Vilhete at right-back from the team that played at MK Dons in midweek and selected Ben Tomlinson for his first outing of the season.

Barnet took the lead after only 23 seconds, the quickest goal scored in the EFL this season. Tomlinson flicked the ball over the static County defence where the unmarked Akinde made no mistake with a left-footed volley from close range.

In the fifth minute the Bees should have forged further ahead when Curtis Weston hit the cross-bar after he had been set-up by Akinde’s astute headed pass.

The visitors controlled the early stages of the match although in Sean Rigg County had an inventive forward capable of troubling the Barnet rear-guard.

As the half developed however County began to turn the tide. Centre-back Darren Jones wasted an opportunity just yards from goal and a Rigg header was just inches wide of its target.

Elliott Johnson and skipper Michael Nelson were now fully employed in keeping County at bay with a number of well-timed tackles and interceptions.

In a number of areas, particularly down one flank, it was now not possible to play flowing football with the ball often getting caught underfoot.

The Bees were disappointed with the abandonment as they were well set to maintain their unbeaten League record this season.

Akinde’s goal will be expunged from the records, although the caution picked up by Weston will count against the Barnet midfielder.
